WeCAN is looking for a volunteer board member to serve as treasurer of our board. As a board or committee member, you’ll be part of a group of decision-makers and can influence the current and future shape of WeCAN.

Position: Volunteer Board Treasurer

Reports To: Board President

Time Commitment: Board of Directors meetings every month for 2 hours. Finance Committee meetings monthly 1 hour each, Executive Committee meetings monthly 1 hour each. Preparation Work: 2-4 hours monthly. 6-10 hours total


Organization Overview: WeCAN serves individuals and families in need in Western Hennepin County. We are a community nonprofit that empowers and equips individuals and families to reach stability and self-sufficiency. WeCAN was founded in 1989 to address the lack of social service programs for low-income families in Western Hennepin County. From emergency assistance to food support to helping our clients with job skills, WeCAN is in existence to help, support, and inspire.


Position Overview: The Board Treasurer plays a vital role in overseeing the financial health and integrity of the Western Communities Action Network (WeCan). The operational tasks of a treasurer concern financial management. These tasks include organizing financial data into helpful reports for the other board members. In addition to financial reporting and presentation, the day-to-day duties of a nonprofit treasurer may consist of signing checks, approving expenses, investing funds, paying bills, and so on. The Treasurer works closely with the Executive Director, the finance committee, and other board members to develop and review fiscal procedures, and financial reports, and develop and approve the annual budget with staff and other board members. The treasurer shall also chair the finance committee.


Qualifications ● Financial management, budgeting, and reporting skills ● Strong attention to detail and organizational skills ● Excellent communication and teamwork skills ● Ability to work independently and remotely ● Experience with QuickBooks or other accounting software. ● A background in finance, accounting, or a related field. ● Dedication to our mission and values.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Financial Oversight: A. Review and monitor financial statements. B. Ensure statements are accurate and reflect the organization's financial position.

2. Budgeting & Financial Planning: A. Collaborate with the Executive Director and staff to prepare the annual budget. B. Provide guidance and input on financial planning to ensure alignment with the organization’s strategic goals. C. Present the budget to the board for approval and review any variances from the approved budget during meetings.

3. Policy Development and Implementation: A. Along with the finance committee, review finance policies and update as necessary.

4. Board Support and Engagement: A. Attend and actively participate in all board meetings. B. Head the finance committee's monthly meetings C. Report on the organization’s financial health and present financial reports at board meetings. D. Serve as an officer at executive committee meetings.
