Trick-or-Trot 5K Run to Benefit WeCAN

Mound Westonka DECA is partnering with Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN) to host a 5K and Fun Run on October 26. This event will take place in and around the MWHS Commons area. Registration and packet pick-up will begin at 8:30 a.m. The 1-Mile Run Fun will begin at 10 a.m., followed immediately by the 5K around 10:15 to 10:30 a.m. Following the race, snacks will be provided to all runners as race and costume winners are announced.

The Trick-Or-Trot 5K and Fun Run is a DECA-sponsored run with an emphasis on having fun and bringing the community together. Events include the 5K, a 1-Mile Fun Run and a Costume Contest. Runners are encouraged to wear costumes to this Halloween-themed run, but are not required. All finishers will be rewarded with a candy prize. Top places in the race and Best Costume winners will also receive a special Halloween-themed prize.

Fifty percent of the event proceeds will be donated to support WeCAN, a local social service agency based in Mound. “It is impressive to have these young leaders from DECA organize this event,” said Executive Director Christopher Anderson. “I’m especially proud to see them understand the importance of giving back to their local community in this way.”

The home base for this event will be the MWHS Commons. The course for both the one-mile and 5K will start and finish at the high school. Check-in for all participants will be in the Commons prior to the race and award winners will be announced back in the Commons after the race.

The quote, “DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe,” embodies the business and leadership skills that students participating in DECA develop and add upon through a series of projects like this one.

WeCAN’s tagline is, “Because Together, WeCAN,” a statement that not only embodies the organization’s forward-thinking attitude, but shows their emphasis on community and community-oriented volunteers.
