Volunteering is a wonderful and rewarding experience. Wendy Gasca is a volunteer who sees WeCAN’s Meals on Wheels program as a way to not only help others, but also to help herself. She found this volunteer opportunity in the Spring of 2014 after a handful of challenges she faced in her life. Wendy pursued this opportunity to go beyond the scope of monetary donations and use her time to give back to her own community by providing hot meals to individuals in need. She sees interactions with clients as a way to make sure they are doing well mentally and physically.
Wendy has appreciated interacting with other volunteers noting that they are “upbeat, caring, hopeful individuals." Wendy expresses gratitude and appreciation to all of the clients who have allowed her to be a part of their lives and their well-being.
In 2018, WeCAN’s Meals on Wheels programs delivered approximately 7,945 hot nutritious meals to people in their homes. People who have a disability or those who are seniors tend to be the majority of the clients for the WeCAN Meals on Wheels program.
WeCAN’s Meals on Wheels program caters meals from the local grocery store, Jubilee Foods. Meals are delivered Monday- Friday to client’s homes. Clients can choose to receive up to 7 meals in a week. Volunteers meet with the Meals on Wheels Coordinator in between 10 and 10:30am to pick up meals. Meals are at the client’s home by 12 p.m. Volunteers then bring supplies back to the WeCAN office to interact with staff and other volunteers.
