Orono Police Chief Correy Farniok made some new friends at the 2017 National Night Out event. The Orono Police Department will be hosting National Night Out on Tuesday, August 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. You are invited to register your block party or neighborhood gathering and receive a visit from the Orono Police Department and the Mound and Long Lake Fire Departments. For many western Hennepin County families struggling with unemployment or the increasing costs of basic necessities like groceries and gas, back-to-school shopping puts significant stress on the household budget. To ease some of that stress, WeCAN is starting its annual collection of new school supplies for K-12 students in its service area. Items that WeCAN ran short of during last year’s distribution included quality backpacks (grade school and large size), 1 inch 3-ring binders, pocket folders, wide lined spiral notebooks and dry erase markers. WeCAN Receives Pet Grant

WeCAN is proud to announce that it has received a $1,000.00 grant from Meals on Wheels America to support its pet assistance program. Funding will be used to provide food, supplies and care for the pets of area clients, which can often be a financial and physical challenge for clients to do so on their own. “Our pet assistance program helps to ensure that our clients’ pets are healthy and receive nutritional meals,” said WeCAN Executive Director Christie Larson. “Having a pet in the home can contribute to a client’s well-being and help him or her feel less isolated.” In total, Meals on Wheels America has granted over $200,000 to nearly 100 local Meals on Wheels programs through the Meals on
